Cynthia Kanner

Cynthia Kanner is vice president, Post Production, for Home Box Office, responsible for overseeing post production on all HBO Films and miniseries.

Among the films and miniseries she has worked on are the critically acclaimed and award-winning “John Adams,” “Generation Kill,” and “Recount,” “American Splendor,” “Maria Full of Grace,” and “Angels in America”. Kanner has always been interested in technologies and has overseen the department as it transitions into a fully digital work flow. Kanner was named to this position in December 2000.

Kanner is also actively involved in several programs which involve HBO and local communities. In 2005 she and her colleagues received the first Heiskell Team Award honoring their public service for the creation of a program called “Digital Dove.” “Digital Dove” received funding from HBO and TimeWarner to teach homeless youth life skills through filmmaking. Since the creation of the project several years ago, alumni have gone on to make films which have screened at various festivals, as well as gain work on TV shows and commercial(s), plying their new found trade. In addition, Kanner started a program called “Watch it and Learn!” which provided access to films and teaching materials at cost to schools across the country. This program is a collaboration between HBO, Time Warner and Columbia University’s EdLab. Currently schools in California, New York and New Hampshire are using tools created by this program to teach political and civic responsibility through films like “Recount” and “John Adams”. HBO and the EdLab are working on cutting edge interactive teaching materials that will be accessed on line.

Prior to HBO, Kanner freelanced in both production and post production and was production executive at Kings Road Entertainment, where her responsibilities ranged from overseeing production of five features, to supervising the budgets and helping develop ad campaigns. She also worked at Coopers & Lybrand while attending graduate school, where she worked on audits and mergers and acquisitions and became qualified as a CPA.

Kanner holds a BA in History from Yale University and an MBA from New York University.
