
Dr. Kevin Geiss is the Program Director for Energy Security in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Installations and Environment.
Dr. Geiss joined the office in 2008 and works on the development, coordination and implementation of the Army’s energy security strategy. Prior to this position, he served as the Assistant Director for National Defense in the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) in the Executive Office of the President, Washington, DC. During his three years at OSTP, he conducted policy and budget review of the Department of Defense science and technology (S&T) efforts and led interagency committees to support national policy development.
Before joining OSTP, Dr. Geiss was a senior research scientist in the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL). In that position, he was responsible for coordinating research plans and programs for a diverse military S&T enterprise including nanotechnology, biotechnology, cognitive sciences and directed energy. As a scientific mentor in AFRL, Dr. Geiss partnered to develop the first microbiological experiments flown on the International Space Station (the MISSE program).
From his active scientific career, Dr. Geiss has one U.S. patent, and twenty-seven publications and technical reports. His most recent publication focuses on military training using virtual and constructive simulation systems. He earned both his Ph.D. and M.S. degrees from Miami University and his B.A from Cedarville University. Dr. Geiss earned professional certificates for executive education at The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania and in software engineering from the Air Force Institute of Technology. In recognition of his significant contributions during his defense civilian service, Dr. Geiss has been awarded he Superior, the Meritorious, and the Exemplary Civilian Service Awards. In addition to his U.S. Air Force and U.S. Army civilian positions, he served in the United States Marine Corps Reserves from 1986-1994.
