Co-Founder/Co-President, Left/Right Productions
BANKS TARVER was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas, the son of a lawyer and an artist. He was a civil rights attorney in his previous life, and was one of the lawyers who successfully challenged the Texas public school finance system as unfair and unequal.
Tarver has a bachelor’s degree from Harvard University, a J.D. from the Boalt Hall School of Law (University of California, Berkeley), and he attended Stanford University’s graduate program in Documentary Filmmaking.
Tarver’s favorite work remains his first, Watch Me Jumpstart, about the legendary band Guided By Voices – made when he had little-to-no idea what he was doing.
In 2004, Tarver partnered with Ken Druckerman to launch Left/Right Productions, and together they have produced some of the better non-fiction programs of the past few decades (This American Life, The Circus) as well as some of the most unsettling (Bobcat Goldthwait’s Misfits & Monsters, Small Town Security, 3am).
