As Head of Scripted, YouTube Originals, Timothy Shey oversees efforts to create scripted original programming on YouTube with the next generation of great storytellers and entertainers, from scripted comedy to drama, action, horror, sci-fi and beyond. Scripted projects launched to date on the YouTube Red subscription service include Lazer Team, Foursome, and Single by 30, with projects in development including Lionsgate’s Step Up.
As director of the YouTube Next Lab, Tim led multiple YouTube efforts to help creators innovate, collaborate and succeed on the platform, including developing flagship YouTube Spaces in Los Angeles, London, Tokyo, and New York; the Creator Playbook of best practices for success on YouTube; executive producing the first-ever YouTube Music Awards with Spike Jonze; and developing daily series YouTube Nation with Dreamworks Animation.
Tim was co-founder and president of Next New Networks, one of the first media companies built on YouTube, and led the company’s creative and platform strategy until its acquisition by YouTube in March 2011. Next New Networks pioneered the practice of audience development and the multi-channel network (MCN) business model, assembling a diverse, successful portfolio of original programming including hit channels Barely Political, VSauce, and ThreadBanger, and a network of over 100 creators such as The Gregory Brothers, racking up over 2 billion video views and thirteen Webby Awards, more than any independent company at the time. They also built industry-leading partnerships with companies such as AOL, Google, and MSN and advertisers including Warner Bros, American Express, Verizon, and Unilever.
